Accepting and Persevering

Last weekend I pulled into a local car show with my yellow '72 VW bus. This is the first time I have put it into a car show, or even participated in one since I was a kid. As I pulled up I noticed some anxiety creeping in. Social anxiety? Impostor syndrome? Probably a mix of both! While I was physically uncomfortable I pushed through the thoughts telling me to go home, and stayed.

Here is what happened: I met hundreds of people who share a similar interest to me, some of which might even be budding friendships. My toddler was able to be outside in the sun and free of screens for a full day. I got inspired to do future projects on the bus and for road trips and vacations I can take. And I solidified something I try to instill in my clients... I can do hard things.

It is really easy to avoid situations and experiences in the name of easing uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. However, in avoiding some uncomfortable situations you don't build distress tolerance and you rob yourself of potentially beautiful and meaningful experiences. For this reason it is so important to learn to accept and tolerate uncomfortable thoughts and feelings so that you can continue to engage in things that bring joy and value to your life.

We are the happiest versions of ourselves when we are engaged in activities and experiences that bring fulfillment to our lives. Next time you hear a voice in the back of your head telling you to go home, or you don't belong I challenge you to challenge it. You might be surprised at the positive impact it can have on your life!
